My Hair is Shedding - What Can I Do to Stop It?

I recently got an email from someone who said that she was “shedding buckets” and she wasn’t sure how much longer she could take it. She wanted to know what she could do to make this stop as soon as possible. The answer to this question is going to depend on the cause of the shedding. Finding out this reason is usually easier said than done, but it’s certainly not impossible when you look at the totality of the situation. Once you find out the cause, the treatments for stopping it usually become more clear. I will discuss this more in the following article.

The Types Of Shedding That Need To Run Their Course: There are times when every one sheds and it’s completely normal and passes relatively quickly. Examples are when the seasons change, when you’ve had stress on your body like giving birth, losing a lot of weight, having a surgical procedure or beginning a new medication. These things cause your hair follicles to switch the phase that they are in and shedding happens as they get ready to begin again.

Most of the time, what you can do about this situation is to just give it time, make sure that you are taking good care of yourself and giving your body what it needs, and keep your scalp and hair clean and healthy. It never hurts to make sure that there’s not any excess inflammation from this process (which might show up as a pink or itchy scalp.) And, trying to stimulate regrowth can be icing on the cake, but neither of these things are required. Sometimes, this is just a matter of practicing good habits and waiting it out.

The Types Of Shedding That Require For You To Fix A Problem Or Take Some Action: Sometimes, giving the shedding time is not going to change anything because the accelerated hair loss is due to a problem that needs to be fixed. Sometimes, people will find that they’ve been waiting months with no change and they decide that perhaps this is not your run of the mill seasonal shedding.

The most common cause of hair loss is androgenic alopecia or AGA. This is sometimes genetic, but not always. And, people who have AGA with no family history whatsoever is not at all uncommon anymore. This type of hair loss can be due to hormonal changes (which is why you sometimes see it at puberty or middle age) or a new sensitivity to the androgens that always have been and always will be present on your scalp. There are varied treatments to help to get this under control and they range from topicals to medications to laser treatments. I usually advocate topicals at first because medications can also cause hair changes, especially to those who are hormonally vulnerable. And most people with AGA are.

There are also medical issues that can cause hair loss. Thyroid problems, autoimmune disorders, infections (yeast, bacteria, and others) as well as disorders or reactions on the scalp are just some of things that can cause accelerated hair loss and shedding. Vitamin deficiencies are another potential cause, but this is relatively rare and often a decent diet and a multi vitamin is all that is needed to make sure that you don’t fall into this category.

The Steps Toward Stopping The Shedding: The first step, as we’ve discussed, is seeing if time is the answer. If not, you will have to dig a little deeper to pinpoint exactly why this his happening. Once you can determine this, the list of possible treatments should get shorter and shorter. In the meantime, it’s always a good idea to take care of your health and stress levels. Also, keep your hair and scalp clean and free of build up but use gentle products to make sure you aren’t worsening inflammation. Speaking of inflammation, this really should be addressed with any hair loss. There are good and gentle anti inflammatories that work topically. Finally, another step that’s important, no matter why the shedding is happening, is stimulating healthy regrowth so that you can quickly replace what has been lost.
