How to Stop Having Periods

Most women have probably contemplated a world where nature’s monthly visit never comes, and wished that they could live there. While on that thought path, many women have wondered if it’s possible to completely stop having periods outside of menopause. If the monthly hassle of shedding our uterine lining could be totally eliminated, our lives would surely be better, we think. It is possible to stop yourself from having periods or severely reduce the amount of periods you have in a year without waiting for menopause to hit you.

Birth Control

Ordinary oral contraceptives (the Pill) are designed to keep you from being able to have children for as long as you are on the medication. The way most of them work is that they have three weeks that have the active ingredient (hormones) and then one week of pills that are placebo. If you are on monophasic contraception, all you have to do is just skip the placebo week and start on another packet. You can do this for multiple packets at a time, effectively gaining complete control over your period. There are also other types of birth control that intentionally limit your periods to about 4 a year (two commonly known ones are Seasonale and Seasonique).
The risk in using this method to completely stop your period is that, because of the way the birth control works, your uterine lining builds up over time, and can cause complications further down the road, including cancer and infertility. If you want to limit your period to only a couple of times a year, you should talk to your doctor and see if your body would react well to certain kinds of birth control. Talk to your doctor if you want to permanently stop your period, because doctors have access to certain resources that might make it a viable possibility. Just be aware that any methods that will completely stop your period will also stop you from being able to have children in the future.

Lifestyle (Diet, Exercise)

It’s a simple fact of life that eventually you will go through menopause and your periods will stop forever. However, in the meanwhile, you can make some lifestyle choices that have the potential to naturally reduce or even stop your periods. For example, it’s relatively well-documented that consistent, rigorous exercise can seriously reduce your period, even to the point of stopping it. However, unless you’re an athlete, it’s unlikely that you will be able or have enough time to exercise enough to stop it.
You can also add and subtract certain foods from your diet to reduce (and in some cases, stop) your period. Try to avoid spices such as garlic, ginger, or sesame, and foods like peppers and papayas. There are also certain herbs that you can make into tea that ancient Chinese doctors used to prescribe to help with menstruation problems, such as angelica root, raspberry leaves, garden sage (lady mantle) and shepherd’s purse. These herbs are scientifically known to stop heavy menstrual bleeding, and depending on your body, may completely stop your periods.

Hysterectomy

The only way outside of menopause to completely, utterly stop you from ever having another period again is getting a hysterectomy, or having a surgery that removes some (or all) of your sexual organs (specifically the cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries and uterus). There are a couple of different kinds of hysterectomies that remove varying amounts of your organs, but they will all effectively end your period forever, because without them, your body has no need to shed your uterine lining, because it would be impossible for you to have a baby without any of those organs. There are a lot of risks and side effects of having a hysterectomy, which may be why most of the hysterectomies that take place are in women that have gotten cancer on their organs.
Periods are a natural part of being a woman, and as painful and inconvenient as they can be, their presence show that you are basically healthy. The most effective way to control your periods is through birth control, the most effective way to end your periods is through a hysterectomy. The best thing is just to struggle through your periods. If you are looking for some other options or are serious about stopping your periods, you should talk to your doctor or at least get a doctor’s opinion.

Does Lemon Stop Your Period?

Many people dismiss old wives’ tales as untrue without testing them first for themselves. While much of the advice that was passed down from mothers to daughters throughout the ages has since been proven as bunk (for example, we now know that the old wives’ tale that explained how maggots get onto meat is false because of advances in science and observations of flies), there is a surprising amount of truth in many of the ancient stories. One of those old wives’ tales that refuses to leave is a method to cut your period short by eating lemon.

Is the Tale True?

Many women have experimented with this wives’ tale, and have found through scientific inquiry that eating a lemon does indeed stop their period, keep their period from beginning, or cut their period short depending on when they begin eating the lemon. However, no formal research has been conducted on women to find out why exactly it works, or what the side effects are. Without proper research, this tale has to remain as it is – a relic of the past that seems to have some serious validity to its claims.
For example, one of the things that is said about eating a lemon is that it will stop your period, but will give you really bad cramps. Another thing that is said is that eating lemon to stop your period will make your next period extra painful. However, not all of the women who have shared their experience of lemons stopping their period have agreed that the next period was very painful, or that the lemons produced extra-painful cramps. It may turn out that women with allergies or intolerances to various substances are affected this way; without a proper study, we can’t be sure, and you will have to conduct your own personal experiments to find out whether or not it works for you.

How it Works

Despite all that talk about how we can’t know anything for 100% certain, there are two hypotheses on why lemon stops your period, one explaining why your cramps would be extra painful, and one explaining why it wouldn’t. The first explanation is that the acidic juices of the lemon mess with your body, changing the way your muscles react so that your period stops, but you have a lot of cramps. The reason the next period would be so painful is by the simple virtue of the fact that you messed with the previous cycle.
The second explanation is similar. The acidic properties of the lemon juice detox your body, causing your uterine lining to shed more quickly. This means that all of the blood that would otherwise come out over a couple of days leaves sooner, cutting off your period if you ate the lemon during your cycle. However, this doesn’t explain why the lemon would stop your period from coming at all.

Alternatives to Lemon – Do They Work?

If a lemon stops your period because of its acidic properties, then it would make sense that other things would be able to stop your period as well. While eating (or just sucking on) a lemon is the wives’ tale, some women have experienced their period stopping just by drinking lemon water (concentrated lemon juice mixed in water) and some have even found that eating lots of other acidic fruits such as oranges, limes, and grapefruit has also unintentionally stopped their periods. Unfortunately, the same problem remains: without a scientific experiment, we can’t know for sure how a lemon stops a period, and we have to realize that it may not stop your period; it might just lessen it or lighten it.
It also means that in order to answer the question about limes, oranges, and grapefruits, you will have to conduct your own personal experiments. While those fruits would be easier to eat to stop your period, that ease is because they aren’t as acidic as lemons, and thus they would be less effective.

In Conclusion

Lemons work far more consistently and painlessly than any of its alternatives, so if you want to stop your period or cut it short, suck on about half of a lemon during the day. Alternatively, you can juice a whole lemon (about 2 tablespoons of juice) and drink it with water to help get it down.
It should be mentioned that you should always talk to your doctor before trying to mess with your body. If you really want to stop your period, just talk to a doctor – they can give you safe, tested prescriptions that match your body type and stage in life.

Does Ibuprofen Stop Your Period?

You may have experienced a time when you were younger where you took a high dosage of ibuprofen while on your period to try and kill the pain of your cramps, and found that not only does it get rid of the pain, but it also seems to completely stop your period. No matter how old you are now you might still want to try and stop your period for a short amount of time using ibuprofen, or just to know whether or not it actually works.

How Ibuprofen Works

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory, over the counter pain medication. It stops pain in your body by inhibiting enzymes that tell your brain about the pain you are feeling. Because your brain does not receive the information those enzymes would be sending it, it cannot tell the source of your pain to swell to try and fix the pain problem; thus ibuprofen is also anti-inflammatory. These two factors can make taking ibuprofen in small doses very helpful when you are on your period, because you will bloat less and you will not feel the pain of your cramps thanks to the active ingredients in the drug. Because it is not a prescribed medication, you can easily get your hands on it.

Why Ibuprofen May or May Not Stop Your Period

There is a hormone in your body called prostaglandin. In essence, this is the hormone that helps your smooth muscles (such as muscles in your stomach or uterus) know when to contract and when to relax. Ibuprofen can inhibit prostaglandin from doing its job, and the result will sometimes mean that if you take ibuprofen while on your period, the flow may be stopped completely. This can sometimes be true of tylenol as well.
In order to stop your period with ibuprofen, you have to take high doses of the drug – about 800 mg doses three times a day. That’s about three little red pills taken three times during a 24 hour period of time, or once every eight hours. Alternately, you can take one or two pills every four hours. Do not do this for a prolonged amount of time! The most you should try to take this much ibuprofen is three days maximum. Ibuprofen is not a prescription for stopping women’s periods – depending on the woman and the period, it may not have any effect on the shedding of the uterus. Always talk to a doctor if you want to stop your period; they get paid to help you fulfill your health goals, and they can give you access to safer methods.

The Dangers of Overdosing on Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen can stop your flow, but it might not, depending on individualities of your body and how heavy your period is. If you try to stop your period by taking large doses of ibuprofen, you need to know the risks that you are going to put your body to. Again, only take high doses of ibuprofen at the instruction of your doctor, and be careful!
Your stomach will be more prone to ulcers, because of the deregulating effect ibuprofen has on prostaglandin. This can lead to internal bleeding in your stomach, nausea, etc. For some people, taking ibuprofen will cause blood problems – some bodies react by clotting blood randomly, others react by inhibiting blood clotting, so if you get a wound, your body can’t stop the bleeding. Both can have deadly consequences. There are other side effects of ibuprofen, such as digestive and breathing problems that are associated with taking high doses of the drug.

In Conclusion

Does ibuprofen stop your period? You will have to experiment to find out for yourself. High doses of ibuprofen (and by the same virtue, tylenol) can stop your period. However, it depends on a lot of factors that are mostly outside of your control. You should be very careful if you decide to try and stop or lessen your flow by taking ibuprofen, because taking too much can do a number on your stomach lining. If you really want to stop your period, talk to your doctor. Doctors can give you safer, personalized prescriptions that will be more likely to have the desired outcome for you with less of the risks.
