One of the common first signs of menopause is that you begin to experience irregular periods. The early menstrual irregularity begins with the shortening of the cycle length.
Typically, what will occur is that the cycle length will widen or even skip menses. These changes in cycles may lead to heavier flow, followed by a lighter flow and occasional spotting. A common reason for the late periods and prolonged bleeding is due to something called anovulation, which is the not releasing of an egg. Nonetheless, when this occurs, there is no signal given to the body to cause a period. Often, when this continues for a long period of time, the body starts to shed the uterine lining, which leads to prolonged bleeding. This could happen for long periods of time, or can eventually correct itself by the next cycle. The unpredictable aspect of this first sign of menopause can become quite frustrating to most women because of the constant changes taking place.
These changes are caused by changes in your hormone levels. When these changes happen, it is often a sign that you are in perimenopause, the stage leading up to menopause. Persistent irregular periods can be a denotation to obtain further evaluation with your doctor. Bleeding longer than 7 days each period, bleeding more often than every 21 days and skipping more than three cycles should be evaluated. If your first signs of irregular periods become persistent do not panic. Remember, you can always consult your doctor to obtain further examination of the situation.
